Overview

Discover two of the most historically rich cities in the Netherlands on this half-day private tour, with a transfer between the cities included. In Leiden, your guide walks you through a city packed with stories: it heroically survived a Spanish siege in 1574, it is where Rembrandt was born, where the Pilgrim Fathers found refuge before sailing to America, and where the oldest university in the Netherlands was founded. In Delft, you step into the Dutch Golden Age: canals, churches, and the stories of Vermeer and William of Orange. Walk past the leaning Old Church and the towering New Church, discover lesser-known gems like the former Dutch East India Company office, and hear the stories of the city that shaped so much of Dutch history. The transfer between the two cities takes just 20 minutes. You can do the tour in either direction. This is a private tour. You set the pace, and if you have any special requests or an interest in a certain topic, just let us know.

Itinerary

1. You will meet your guide in the middle of Beestenmarkt square in Leiden. This is a 5 minute walk away from Leiden Central Station. Your tour of the city starts here.

2. Morspoort

   The first thing you will see during the tour is the famous Morspoort, one of the oldest entrances to the city.

3. Molen de Put

   You will walk past the iconic 17th century windmill Molen de Put. This is the same type of mill that the parents of Rembrandt owned.

4. Rembrandtplaats

   This square is named after the famous Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn, who used to live in Leiden. Let's find out more about it.

5. Stadsgehoorzaal

   You will see the Stadsgehoorzaal, as You are walking on the Breestraat. This is a much used concert hall.

6. Pieterskerk Leiden

   You cannot miss the Pieterskerk of course, the most famous church of Leiden. You will learn more about its history (going back to the 12th century!) and current use.

7. het Stadhuis van Leiden uit 1596

   The old town hall of Leiden. It is an iconic building that you cannot miss during the tour. Your guide will tell you about it!

8. Burcht van Leiden

   You will visit the exterior of the Burcht van Leiden, an old castle used for defensive purposes in war times. It is located on top of a hill and adds to the particular character of Leiden.

9. Station Leiden Centraal

   You will make your way to Leiden Centraal Station and board a 20 minute train to Delft.

10. Markt

    You will make your way to the central square in Delft, Markt. There you will see the second-tallest church tower of the country, that is the final resting place of the Orange family, Delft's 17th-century town hall and much more. On your way there, you will cross Delft's oldest and second-oldest canals.

11. Vieille église

    You are now in the old beer brewing quarter of Delft. Where did the brewers go? You will also see the Old Church, perhaps the most recognizable building of the city. How old is it exactly and why is it leaning?

12. Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland

    On your way down the Oude Delft canal, you will pass by a heavily decorated facade, that of the Gemeenlandshuis. What is this building and why was it so important?

13. Museum Prinsenhof Delft

    This place has played a deciding role in Dutch history. The Father of the Fatherland has been assassinated here! Let's find out more about it.

14. You will make your way to the south of the city. We will pass by a large former weapons Armory of the V.O.C. Let's find out more about Delft's role in the golden days of the Dutch Republic. Also around here, we can take a look at the exact spot where Vermeer was standing when he made his painting 'View of Delft'.

15. You will make our way to the Beestenmarkt. This is a picturesque square, often crowded with people. They used to organize animal markets here. On your way, you will pass by some former Delft Blue pottery manufacturers, an old synagogue, and the oldest hospital of the Netherlands.

Pickup or meet at the departure point.

We will contact you beforehand to coordinate this. If you book an option that does not include a pick-up and a drop-off, you will meet your guide at the meeting point.
