Discover the ancient capital of the Lydian Empire on this immersive tour of Sardis, a city of legendary wealth and one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor where an early Christian community once gathered in the name of St. John. Walk among the ruins of the sacred temples of Cybele and Diana, where a magnificent fourth century Basilica was later added, reflecting the region’s transformation from pagan worship to early Christianity. Stand beside the legendary golden River Pactolus, whose sands were said to have fuelled the fortune of King Croesus, and trace a surviving section of the Royal Road, the great highway that once connected Sardis to the heart of Persia. Marvel at the beautifully reconstructed synagogue, the largest ancient synagogue discovered in the diaspora, and the adjacent Roman gymnasium with its soaring marble facade and intricate mosaics. After a morning of discovery, you will enjoy a delicious traditional Turkish lunch before a relaxing return drive to Izmir.

1. Sardis (Sardes)

   This old synagogue was constructed in the 3rd century A.D. The main archaeological discovery in the excavations in Sardis. It's one of Anatolia 's oldest synagogues. The large ruins here also contain lovely mosaic tiles. Sardis is also one o the Seven Churches of Revelation in the Bible. The ruins of ancient Sart (Sardis), once the capital of the Lydian realm of Croesus, lie on the Sart Cayi (Pactole River). Here the first coins were minted. The Temple of Artemis and a restored gymnasium testify to the city's past splendour, as does the important third-century A.D synagogue. Just stunning.
