Barolo
Barolo is located in the northwestern portion of Piedmont called Langhe, about seven miles southwest of Alba. There are 11 communes that make up the wine producing region of Barolo, including the five most prominent ones: Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, and Monforte d’Alba. To break it down, Langhe can be divided into two areas, the Serralunga Valley where the Fontanafredda estate is located, which encompasses the eastern communes of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d'Alba, and Serralunga d'Alba, and the Central Valley, which covers Barolo and La Morra. The greatest difference between these two divisions is the soil; while the Serralunga Valley has soils high in sand and limestone, the latter tends to be higher in clay. The sandy soils of Serralunga produces more intense wines that demand a longer aging period than the Central Valley Barolos, which are known for softer, fruitier expressions of the region. The commune of La Morra produces the most wine of the five
Alba
A once-powerful city-state whose center sported more than 100 towers, Alba is considered the capital of the Langhe, and has big-city confidence and energy while retaining all the grace and warmth of a small rural town. Alba's considerable gastronomic reputation comes courtesy of its white truffles, dark chocolate and wine. Its annual autumn truffle fair draws huge crowds and the odd truffle-mad celebrity. The vendemmia (grape harvest) remains refreshingly local and low key, if ecstatic in its own way.
Monforte d'Alba
Monforte d'Alba is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Cuneo in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 60 kilometers (37 mi) southeast of Turin and about 40 kilometers (25 mi) northeast of Cuneo. Monforte d'Alba borders the following municipalities: Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Dogliani, Monchiero, Novello, Roddino, and Serralunga d'Alba. Monforte d'Alba is part of the zone of the Barolo wine production area.
