Night Kayaking and Glowworm Excursion in Rotorua

Explore the lakes of Rotorua on a guided kayaking trip at twilight and nightfall. This adventure takes you along the shores to discover small caves home to glowworm colonies, with stargazing included if the sky is clear. The activity is led by expert local guides, with a ratio of one guide for every eight kayakers to ensure personalised support. The focus is on environmental respect and connecting with nature. All necessary equipment is provided, and no prior kayaking experience is required. The service includes round-trip transfers from the Rotorua Information Centre, located at 1167 Fenton Street.

Activity itinerary

Meet your Taiao Adventures guide at the Rotorua Information Centre to start your night. No previous experience is needed and first-time kayakers are very welcome. We’ll take care of the gear, transport and safety briefing before getting you out on the water. As daylight fades, paddle along the lake edge with your guide and watch the surroundings change as darkness settles in. Small groups and a relaxed pace give you time to slow down, take it all in and enjoy just how peaceful it is out there at night. Then come the glow worms. Follow your guide to pockets of thousands of glow worms shining in their natural habitat, before settling in at the main viewing area beneath a canopy of tiny lights. There’s no rushing through. You’ll have time to sit quietly, let your eyes adjust and take in the glow while your guide shares stories and knowledge about what you’re seeing. On clear nights, the experience continues on the paddle back with incredible stars overhead and the Milky Way stretching across the sky. After approximately 90 minutes on the water, we’ll return to shore and transport you back to the Rotorua Information Centre.

What to know before you go

• Not recommended for travellers with cardiovascular problems.
• Not recommended for travellers with spinal problems.
• Suitable for all fitness levels.
• Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (1:1 supervision ratio required at all times).
• From November to February: light clothing, shorts or leggings and at least two layers for the upper body are recommended.
• From March to October: warm, thermal, fleece or wool clothing (three layers for the upper body), a warm hat and gloves are recommended; a wetsuit is provided over clothes.
• Water shoes are recommended but provided free of charge if needed.
• Bringing a towel and a change of clothes is advised.
• The activity can accommodate a maximum of 48 travellers.
