Capri, Hvar, Rosario: Six Islands to Discover in a Day, to Watch on Video
The Blue Grotto of Capri, the coves of Hvar, the turquoise waters of the Rosario Islands: an island changes a trip, even for just a day. Here are six boat getaways, from the Mediterranean to Tasmania, to watch on video before you cast off.
Editor’s note
6experiences, one video each
A trip to an island comes down to details: how long the crossing takes, the type of boat, the time you actually spend ashore and the swimming stops.
Video shows all of that. Here are six islands to discover in a day, each with its video and its booking.

Stop 01 · Capri, from Sorrento
Capri and the Blue Grotto, at Daybreak
Leaving Sorrento early lets you discover Capri before the crowds. The cruise first follows the coast, past the fishing village of Marina Grande and the remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century BC.
On arrival, it is on to the famous Blue Grotto, where the water lights up an intense blue. Whether you can enter depends, however, on the weather and the tide.
What the video shows: the boat, the Capri coastline and the entrance to the Blue Grotto.
Stop 02 · Split, Croatia
The Blue Cave of Biševo, Vis and Hvar
After 90 minutes by speedboat from Split, the first stop is the island of Biševo and its Blue Cave, a famous natural phenomenon of the Adriatic.
The day continues in the settings of the film Mamma Mia, at the fishing village of Komiža on the island of Vis, then on to Hvar, island-hopping across five islands in all.
What the video shows: the speed of the boat, the cave and the coves, to see whether such a packed day suits you.
Stop 03 · Cartagena, Colombia
The Rosario Islands, off Cartagena
Off Cartagena de Indias, the Rosario Islands archipelago offers turquoise waters and coral reefs. The eco option stops at the historic Bocachica fort, then at three islands, with snorkelling and lunch.
A VIP option by speedboat and in a small group is also available, for extra comfort.
What the video shows: the colour of the water, the beaches and the difference between the options.
Stop 04 · Galway, Ireland
Inis Oírr and the Cliffs of Moher
From Galway, the day links two treasures of the Wild Atlantic Way. The boat leaves Doolin for Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, where you have two hours to explore at your own pace.
On the way back, weather permitting, the boat passes beneath the Cliffs of Moher, seen from the ocean.
What the video shows: the island, its stone walls and the cliffs seen from the sea.
Stop 05 · Hobart, Tasmania
Bruny Island, Wild and Full of Flavour
South of Hobart, Bruny Island is explored in an all-inclusive day. Morning tea is taken on the beach, with oysters, cheeses and fresh bread from the island.
The guide then tells the island’s story as far as Cape Bruny Lighthouse, whose guided tour is reserved for this excursion.
What the video shows: the island’s landscapes, the tastings and the lighthouse.
Stop 06 · Athens, Greece
Agistri, Moni and Aegina in the Saronic Gulf
Aboard a traditional wooden boat, this day cruise explores the Saronic Gulf, south of Athens, with about an hour and a half on each island.
Agistri is explored on foot or by bike, Aegina was the first capital of modern Greece, and you swim at Moni or Metopi. Lunch and drinks are included.
What the video shows: the boat, the stops and the waters of the gulf.
Final thoughts
One Island, One Day, One Memory
An island is better savoured when you know how long you will spend there and how you will get there. The video answers both questions before you leave.
Trips at sea depend on the weather, and some caves on the tide: check the conditions on each listing. Bookings are handled by our partner Viator, a Tripadvisor company.
